Cás na Gaeilge sa toghchán áitiúil /Irish and the local elections

Chuireamar cúpla ceist ar na hiarrthóirí sa toghchán áitiúil i Luimneach faoin dtacaíocht a bhéadh siad sásta thabhairt do chás na Gaeilge dá dtoghfaí iad.
Chualamar ó gach príomhpháirtí, agus tá samplaí dá gcuid tuairimí thíos:

Elena Secas

(An Lucht Oibre)

elenaScríobh Elena alt tuairisciúil chugainn i mBéarla agus i nGaeilge, cé gur rugadh agus tógadh i Moldovia í. Tá dhá theanga oifigiúil sa tír sin, agus mar gheall ar sin, deireann sí go bhfuil fhios aici ar thábhacht an dhátheangachais. Ceapann sí nach bhfuil Gaeilge le feiceáil móran i lár na cathrach, agus gurb é siúd an príomhaidhm – Gaeilge a thabhairt ar ais go láidir ar na sráideanna – sna siopaí, sna comharthaí poiblí. Is é a tuairim go bhfuil deis ag cathair Luimnigh bheith chun tosaigh sna gníomhartha athbheochain seo.

Seán Lynch

(Fianna Fáil)

ffDeireann Seán go bhfuil an-shuim aige i, agus an-mheas aige ar an Ghaeilge. Baineann sé triail as a chuid Gaeilge go laethiúil, agus d’fhreastal a mhac ar Ghaelcholáiste Luimnigh. Síleann seisean go gcaithfear níos mó úsáid a bhaint as Gaeilge taobh amuigh den chóras oideachais, agus mhóidh sé a dhícheall a dhéanamh ar son na teanga.

Séighin Ó Ceallaigh

(Sinn Féin)

seighin-oceallaighTá Séighin ag críochnú céim sa Ghaeilge in Ollscoil Luimnigh faoi láthair. Deireann sé go mbíonn sé i gconaí ag tabhairt tacaíocht don nGaeilge, agus dá dteipeadh air sa toghchán, bhéadh sé fós ag obair as son na teanga.

Maria Byrne

(Fine Gael)

mariabyrne2,jpgMar bhall ar choiste Ghaelcholáiste Luimnigh le seacht mbliain anuas, deireann Maria go dtugann sí an-tacaíocht don teanga. Bhéadh áthas uirthi cúnamh a thabhairt do Chonradh na Gaeilge dá dtoghfaí í.

As Béarla /English
We asked candidates for the local elections in Limerick how supportive would they be of the Irish language if elected, and received responses from all of the main parties, their thoughts are outlined below:

Elena Secas

(An Lucht Oibre)
Elena provided her thoughts to us in English and in Irish, despite being from Moldovia and not being used to communicating in Irish. She says she is very familiar with bilingualism issues, coming as she does from a country with two official languages also. She thinks that it is critical that Irish is seen more in public life – on the streets, in the shops, on public notices – and would work to make this happen, with an opportunity there for Limerick to take the lead nationally.

Seán Lynch

(Fianna Fáil)
Seán says he has a great interest in and respect for Irish and that he tries to use his few words every day. His son went to a gaelcholáiste, and Seán feels it is important for the future of Irish that it is spoken more widely outside of the education system also. He promises to do his best on behalf of the language if elected.

Séighin Ó Ceallaigh

(Sinn Féin)
Séighin is just completing his degree in Irish in UL – he has spoken Irish since he was very young and says he has always supported the language, something he will continue to do, whether or not he is elected.

Maria Byrne

(Fine Gael)
Maria has being on the board of the gaelcholáiste in Limerick for the last seven years, and would be very happy to help Conradh na Gaeilge if she was elected.
